Each time I go to a new part of Nicaragua it astounds me how diverse a small country can be! Just 3 hours from my home, Leon which has been called the “hottest city in Central America” you reach the northern highlands where you feel an instant temperature drop! These parts are not on the typical gringo trail which means a nice break from the party scene.
Somoto canon is a must do, barley anyone seems to travel there and I don’t know why! 100m high cliffs, clear waters and some lovely hiking made for an incredible day. I’ll let these pictures speak for themselves.
Matagalpa is a town perfect for avid hikers. Within half an hour there are a number of hiking ranges, coffee farms, waterfalls and miradors. Selva Negra is the main reason people venture here and for good reason. Easy to intermediate level hiking trails, great scenery, lots of wildlife, quiet and incredibly beautiful. Very different to the rest of Nicaragua which is quite dry during this season.
